Tencent, one of the largest internet and gaming companies globally, has been expanding its business interests, taping in the areas such as chips and cloud computing. The company launched three chips it created, marking the first time the WeChat app – operator has publicly talked about its progress in the semiconductors industry.
One of the semiconductors – Zixiao – can process images, video and natural language. It could be used for AI voice assistants. The second one is a video transcoding chip – used for converting videos into different formats. And the third one is a network card designed to help cloud computing processes.
Tencent’s efforts come after other Chinese tech giants such as Baidu, which launched its second-generation artificial intelligence chip in August. Also, in October, Alibaba released a chip meant for servers and cloud computing.
At the closing bell of the Hong Kong market, Tencent stock price was up 2.52%.
