Ford recalls 661,000 vehicles across North America, Canada, and Mexico. The announcement follows an idle in production due to chip shortage

According to documents posted by the second-largest US automaker, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration first required the recall in April 2020 after 11 roof rail cover detachment reports. At that time, Ford considered the recall to be unnecessary because of the low likelihood of a roof rail detaching and the fact that drivers themselves could see a loose roof rail cover.

On Sunday, a Ford spokeswoman stated that the automaker is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the loose roof rail cover.

The recall includes 620,483 vehicles in the US, 36,419 in Canada, and 4,260 in Mexico. The retention pins could loosen and allow roof rail covers to detach from the car. The recall covers the 2016 – 2019 Ford Explorer. According to the same document, the customer notification will start in the week of June 28. Dealers will install push pins and replace any damaged rail clips and roof rail covers.

At the moment of writing, Ford stock price closed the session 0.68% higher.
