Olympic Games Postponed for the first time since World War II

A shocking decision has been made Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee regarding the faith of this year's Summer Olympics.

The 2020 Olympic Games were meant to take place in Tokyo between July 24 and August 9. Since 1896, excepting the two World Wars, the Olympics have never been canceled or postponed. This unseen measure was taken to protect the athletes and the public due to the Coronavirus pandemic. At the moment there is no specific date for next year’s Olympics.

Olympics ROI

It is known that this type of event is intensively money consuming. The Japanese have made their fair share of investments and were expecting a specific return on those. Postponing the games could mean a loss of 640.8 Billion Yen, which is difficult considering that the tourism sector is already struck, as estimates say. Analysts expect a drop of 75% on tourism revenue in the first half of the year, and 50% during the second half.

According to Katsuhiro Miyamoto, professor of theoretical economics at Kansai University, "a considerably large economic loss would be expected." He also estimated that 4.5151 Trillion Yen could be lost if the Olympics don't take place at all.

Since the announcement has been made, the USD/JPY sat at 111.3,3 GBP/JPY traded beyond 129.00, recovering from yesterday’s 127.35.

Tokyo’s Japan225 closed at a gain of 7.1%, its biggest gain since February 2016.

On Tuesday, more than 1,120 cases of Coronavirus have been reported in Japan, with more than 40 deaths.
