“In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency because this President represents an imminent threat to both. The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified, and so is the immediate need for action,” stated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday as she announced that the House would proceed with legislation to impeach the incumbent President Donald Trump.
According to Pelosi, the impeachment will be the last resort if the vice president Mike Pence and Cabinet do not invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office, declaring him “incapable of executing the duties of his office.”
If any Republicans or Democrats are not in favor, Pelosi will again present the resolution for a vote on Tuesday. The impeachment vote could be held as soon as Wednesday. Still, the House could delay the related articles to the Senate given that President-elect Joe Biden must put his cabinet nominees and top legislative priorities in order. However, even if everything goes as planned, the impeachment could not start before January 19, as the Senate is currently in recess.
Joe Biden refrained from making any comments on Pelosi’s decision. However, he stated last week that the quickest way to get Trump out of office would be his inauguration.
