How does commodity trading work?

People trade commodities everywhere in the world, on many different exchanges, and in a variety of distinct ways. Here at CAPEX, we offer you one of the most popular means of investing in commodities: through CFDs. Many like trading CFDs on commodities since they don’t have to physically own these assets: they simply trade their price.

Also, the commodities market is very enticing for high risk clients because prices can shift dramatically from one direction to the other due to their supply and demand sudden changes.

Additional advantages for trading CFDs with a commodity broker:

The option to go short, as CFDs are flexible and you can trade both directions of the market (both rising and falling markets)

High liquidity volumes, because of the many speculation activities in the commodities market

The possibility to diversify your trading portfolio and use CFDs as a hedge against inflation

What are the main types of commodities?

There are two main types of commodities: energies & metals (also known as hard commodities), and grains (soft commodities).

You can start your commodities trading journey on energies such as Natural Gas, Crude Oil, Brent Oil or Heating Oil from your MT5 or WebTrader platform.

With us, you can trade CFDs on the most popular metals, such as Gold, Silver, Platinum, Palladium, and Copper from your MT5 or WebTrader platform.

Apart from the energy and metal contracts, we also offer a batch of soft commodities products, including Cocoa, Sugar, Wheat, Corn, and Coffee.

What affects the prices of commodities?

Many factors can impact commodity prices. Here are the most important ones:

Supply and demand

Whenever supply and demand balance out, the prices of commodities remain stable. But when the market anticipates or expects a supply issue (as a result of production cuts, natural disasters, major world events etc…) or a demand need (as a result of population growth, expanding economy etc…), prices go higher or lower.

Price inflation

Inflation is another major factor that impacts the prices of commodities.

Currency strength

The world’s most traded commodities are directly linked to popular Forex pairs. For example, most commodities are priced in US dollars, so it's worth keeping a close eye on the dollar index. Also, the Canadian dollar has a strong bond with oil prices, as Canada exports large quantities of black gold.
