TSMC expands its horizons in America.

Last week we talked about a potential expansion of Taiwan TSCM in America, it’s been confirmed yesterday: they will build a factory in Arizona.

One of the world's largest chip-making companies is bringing the manufacturing power in the States, by building a plant worth $12 billion, with construction starting next year. According to TSMC, the factory will create more than 1,600 jobs. The actual production is set to begin in 2024.

The partnership is seen as a victory for Trump administration, as it said that the national security is at risk because of the reliance on Asia for chip manufacturing. According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, this "bolsters U.S. national security at a time when China is trying to dominate cutting-edge tech and control critical industries."TSMC declared that “this project is of critical, strategic importance to a vibrant and competitive U.S. semiconductor ecosystem that enables leading U.S. companies to fabricate their cutting-edge semiconductor products within the United States.”

For a long time, this was considered a vital industrial sector in the U.S., but lately stagnated compared to other countries, making the States fearing backwardness. At the moment, America is responsible for 13% of the world’s semiconductor manufacturing power, the same level it has since 2015. Compared to the Chinese frenemy, which managed to increase its power from 8% in 2015 to 12%, it holds today.

The administration hopes that this partnership will help America stay ahead of China and other chip-producing countries.

TSMC ended yesterday’s trading session up 2.32%. It continued the rally today, gaining 0.12% in pre-market.
